ENERGY / EUROSTAT

Energy includes fuels, heating, transport and electricity. Electricity generation is only one part of the picture. Each indicator keeps its own denominator and reporting year.

Renewables and import dependency

EU-27 comparisons use the Greek reporting year. Renewable shares follow official accounting rules and are not simply the renewable share of domestic generation. Renewable energy quantities are not connected here; import and export quantities appear below.

Electricity production over time

What produces our electricity?

Selected fuel groups, same year. Shares are calculated against gross domestic generation; minor sources may be outside these groups. Imports are excluded. GWh measures energy produced, not installed capacity.

Beyond electricity

Reading the energy figures

The official renewable electricity share uses consumption and normalised wind and hydro output. It will differ from the raw renewable share of domestic generation in the table.

More renewables do not automatically mean cheaper bills. Lower import dependency does not by itself prove secure supply. Generation volumes receive a neutral interpretation because demand, exports and the fuel mix also matter.

What households pay for energy

Euro per kWh, including taxes. S1 means January–June; S2 means July–December. Prices refer to the stated annual consumption band.

Greece and EU-27: same half-year, consumption band and tax basis. Final consumer prices can reflect government support; these are not prices before subsidies or production costs.

Electricity price components

Annual household electricity prices: energy and supply, network costs, and net taxes and levies. Net taxes already include reported allowances; do not add subsidies again. Each indicator shows its latest published year.

Electricity price and public support

Annual breakdown, same year and consumption band. Before support means adding back reported allowances, with VAT unchanged. It is not production cost. Missing subsidies are never treated as zero.

Latest comparable support breakdown: 2024. The 2025 allowance has a different sign in the source and is not used for a before-support reconstruction pending clarification.

Energy quantities behind import dependency

Net imports = imports minus exports. Import dependency = net imports / gross available energy. All values use thousand tonnes of oil equivalent, a common energy unit rather than physical oil tonnage. This is all energy, not just electricity.

Where energy is used

Final consumption for energy use, all energy products. Homes exclude private transport, which belongs to transport. Transport covers domestic transport activities, including domestic aviation. Industry excludes energy transformation and non-energy feedstocks. The total includes all listed sectors; do not add the total to its parts.

Quantities are in thousand tonnes of oil equivalent. Lower consumption can reflect efficiency, weather or reduced activity; it is not automatically an improvement. EU totals describe a much larger population and economy.

Energy used in homes by fuel

Final household energy consumption by fuel, excluding private transport. Electricity includes all generation sources; petroleum products exclude their biofuel portion. These three fuels are only part of household energy use, not a complete mix. Quantities in thousand tonnes of oil equivalent, not bills or physical fuel tonnes.
